Join your fellow weavers for a virtual gathering on Zoom. We'll start with conversation and show & tell (don't forget to mute yourself when you aren't speaking), then hear an illustrated talk from Adam Minter, author of Secondhand: Travels in the New Global Garage Sale. Adam will focus on recycled clothing and textiles, in particular the Indian "shoddy" industry.

"Shoddy." For most people, it's shorthand for poor quality. For a much smaller group, it's the original sustainable textile. In his talk, Adam Minter will explore the fascinating history of this much-maligned fabric, and follow it to Panipat, India where - after 200 years - its mass production is finally coming to an end.

Adam Minter is the great-grandson of an immigrant scrap peddler from southern Russia. Like everyone in his family, he worked in the scrap warehouse. Unlike other members of his family, he left the business and became a writer. In 2002, he moved to Shanghai where he became the only foreign correspondent reporting regularly on China's scrap recycling industry, primarily for Scrap Magazine and Recycling International. His work on waste and recycling has been featured in publications ranging from the Wall Street Journal to Vice. His most recent book, "Secondhand: Travels in the New Global Garage Sale," is a deep dive into the world of thrift stores and flea markets - and what they tell us about consumerism and the environment. In addition to his work on waste and recycling, Adam is a columnist for Bloomberg Opinion.
