About this event

This workshop focuses on learning the techniques used to create Ikat, tied and dyed weft yarns. Starting with simple ties that produce undulating patterns we will move on to more intricate ties used by Cambodian artist to create patterned woven fabrics, Khmer Hol. Along with how to design patterned wefts for weaving, students will learn 2 ways to wind the pattern wefts before tying. Working with natural fibers, yarns will be tied during the workshop.  8/2 or 10/2 cotton work well.  More detail can be achieved with finer yarns but 5/2 is great if you are planning a heavier fabric. The yarns will not be dyed or woven during the workshop.  Dye will be discussed and weaving with resist dyed yarns will be explained.

Additionally we will look at how using fabric strips or a heavier weft yarn can be adapted for incorporating into Sakiori weaving.  Look for light or bright fabrics with little or no pattern for the best results.

Ikat & Khmer Hol textile samples will be studied and participants taught to graph designs.  Actual textiles, primarily from Thailand and Cambodia, will be available for study.  How to calculate yarn lengths and how to resist tie weft threads will be covered.

The first day participants will prepare samples used to create weft shifted patterns now popular in Thailand and perfect for larger wall hangings.  After becoming comfortable with the process, participants will pick a design, wind yarns and begin working on tying more complicated resist patterns.  Natural fibers should be used and can be white, or a bright color to start with.  (Light colors can be used but are not as effective as bright colors.)  Other yarn and fabric types are possible depending on the detail of the dye planned.  Note:  All natural fiber are fine with indigo.

Previously dyed samples will be studied and the use of dye discussed.

A variety of techniques used to control the dye and depth of color will be covered along with over-dying.

No previous experience needed.
