“Secrets of the Chehrābād Mummies”

Beginning with a discovery in 1994, archaeologists working in northwest Iran have found the well-preserved remains of at least six salt mummies, together with clothes, tools, and other equipment. The remains are from ancient Persian miners who were naturally mummified after the salt mine where they were working collapsed. Thousands of years later, their horrifying fate gives textile archaeologists a chance to examine examples of ordinary work clothes from as long ago as the 6th century BCE.

Karina will share what she and other textile researchers have discovered about how these garments were woven and tailored. What do they reveal about textile technology in ancient Persia? About how garments were constructed to suit the miners' work needs?
