Peruvian weavers as early as 500 b.c. developed a special method of weaving ‘pure’ color areas, with warps and wefts of the same color, as needed to create designs. Sometimes forming simple geometric blocks or stepped designs, and other times forming elaborate curvilinear elements of supernatural beings, this meticulous approach to weaving was truly unique. The warping process incorporated a complex system of scaffolds—sticks or yarns—to enable the changing of the warp yarns. Various cultures from the Andes, over hundreds of years, developed extraordinary examples of this special weaving process, and in this lecture we will examine a selection of them, to see the range, and discuss how they were made.
