INTRODUCTION TO TAPESTRY WEAVING

with KATHLEEN WALN

February 10, 2024 Immediately following SCHG Meeting

Long to weave images – pictorial or abstract -- but don’t know where to begin?  In this afternoon class, you will be introduced to the basic techniques to begin your tapestry journey. The emphasis of this intro class will be weaving techniques, but we will also discuss yarns, looms, and weaving tools.

A simple frame loom (pre-warped) will be provided for use during class which may be purchased after class for $20.  Students wishing to use their own loom, must contact instructor Kathleen Waln 626.512.3904 ahead of time. The loom must be warped before the workshop begins!

Students should bring: dressmakers tape measure, small sharp scissors, a heavy metal kitchen fork (to use as a beater) and lunch.  Optional supplies (which can be borrowed during class) – wooden pick up stick at least ¾”wide by 12” long, wood or plastic long tapestry needles.

Please pack a lunch! To accommodate requests to have this workshop follow the guild meeting, we’ll be starting quite shortly after the meeting ends.

Kathleen Huntington Waln has been working with fiber & fabric for over forty years, first as a theatre educator/costume designer and more recently as a fabric designer. Her passions include Shibori, Ikat and researching the history of the fabric arts. Although retired from the university, she now teaches Tapestry at the Charter Oak Weaving and Spinning class in Covina! She harvests her own wild, organic cotton trees and loves to dye and spin their yield.  Kathleen holds a MFA in Theatrical Design from the University of Texas at Austin where her love of weaving began. khwaln@me.com  http://weaverkat.blogspot.com/
